Description: This roof-seat break was owned by Emmett Jennings, the son of the manufacturer. Since all three seats are "on the roof", the break was mounted using a portable, folding ladder. Black with red trim. Red lovered sides with space inside for dogs or baggage. Large lights on each side.
Since Emmett Jennings ran a coach line in the 1890's, this vehicle may have been used to carry passengers between Avon and Rochester, NY. However, breaks were used primarily as recreational vehicles, for outings, picnics, hunting or race meetings. The "Break" was so named because it was designed to break in, or train young and inexperienced horses. The vehicle's high seat afforded its driver visibility, safety and control over his untrained horses. It would require four horses to pull it.
